Back in the late 80s, Philadelphia had a blossoming hip-hop contingency that drew a lot from their counterparts in New York. THey even gave it a local “brotherly love” twist that gave way to a complete hip-hop scene. One that included breaking, graffitiing and freestyle cyphering. The Fresh Prince and DJ Jazzy Jeff (also known as Will & Jazz from The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air) are still seen as the pioneers of the Philadelphia hip-hop game.
Over the years, Philadelphia has been home to a number of rappers and groups including The Roots, Freeway, Cassidy and now upstart Meek Mill. With the exception of Meek, all of these artists can attribute some part of their musical mantra to these rap pioneers.
