When I first heard the name Hoodie Allen I laughed. I wasn’t quite sure whether to take this kid seriously. Then I listened to his music. The recent UPenn grad beings a dynamic look to the game. While some would argue that he’s just another white college rapper trying to make some money, his lyrics and eclectic sampling mix show his love and devotion to hip-hop culture. Hoodie has gained most of his notoriety through word of mouth. Yet, his recently released mixtape “Pep Rally” speaks for itself.

What caught my eye with his clever and witty punchlines. He often references athletes and actors a la Wale. He even hits up the likes of my favorite NBA Point Guard Stephen Curry. Hoodie also uses a wide variety of samples ranging from Death Cab for Cutie all the all the way down to Marina and the Diamonds on my favorite song “You are Not a Robot.” For an artist to be so diverse at such an early point in their musical careers shows that Hoodie is well ahead of his time.

For Hoodie Allen it’s all about being creative. He samples V.V. Brown sampled techno-melodic anthem in “Swimming with Sharks” and mixes it with a background marching band that highlights the pep rally theme. A review of Pep Rally cannot go without mentioning the dope lyrical display Hoodie puts on in “Tighten Up”. This rock-funk joint is perfect for lyrical fire. He takes a piece out of Big Sean’s lyrical playbook and even one up’s his talents.

Stay tuned for more from Hoodie Allen as he rises to the top.

Download a copy of “Pep Rally” and show Hoodie Allen the love he deserves.

Here’s a short testimonial that Pill recorded for the Testify Project, an effort to collect and document stories of injustice from people around the country. Five of these testimonials will be screened for delegates to the United Nations at a summit in Geneva next month. In the clip above, Pill speaks briefly about the impact of gentrification on the poverty stricken areas of Atlanta that he came up in.
